Listen to Me is the 13th installment in the Rizzoli & Isles series by bestselling author Tess Gerritsen. In this novel, Jane Rizzoli, a homicide detective at Boston PD, and Moira Isles, a medical examiner, are involved in solving the brutal murder of Sofia Suarez, a widow and a popular nurse at a local hospital. On the surface there doesn’t seem to be any reason for the murder, and Jane has her work cut out for her. Jane’s mother, Angela, who fits the stereotype of an overbearing Italian mother, is having problems in her neighborhood, with some suspicious neighbors moving in, a major tiff with her best friend, a runaway teenager, and her boyfriend out of town, keeps calling Jane for help even though Jane is busy trying to solve the Suarez murder. It just so happens that a doctor who worked closely with Suarez is the father of a girl who was involved in an unsolved hit & run accident. Jane thinks there may be a connection and proceeds to find it.

Gerritsen knows how to make her characters seem real and weaves real-life events into the lives of her characters. Moira is a pianist who is practicing for a program put on by an amateur orchestra made up of doctors; Dr. Antrim is also a member. Moira doesn’t mention the program and Jane is puzzled as to why she wasn’t invited. Many things are happening in this novel as the main characters participate in believable happenings in their personal lives while at the same time pursuing a murderer.

Most thriller readers will enjoy Gerritsen’s expertise in telling a story, and while those who are familiar with this series will know the history of Jane and Moira, the novel can be read as a standalone novel for new readers. One thing that readers will notice about this novel that is a bit different than usual is the amount of humor, mostly brought on by Jane’s mother and readers’ ability to relate. It makes reading this excellent novel lots of fun and the story seems lighter than usual.

All told, this is a good novel and is definitely recommended for all thriller aficionados.
